The Sato family established San-Jirushi in Mie, Japan, as a Tamari soy sauce and miso company in 1804. The three-river design of their logo came from the three rivers in the area that they used for their cargo-vessels when they were a wholesaler in port.

In 1978, San-Jirushi established San-J to begin selling their Tamari soy sauce in the US as an importer, and their products were very well accepted in the market. The San-J plant was then built in Henrico, Virginia, in 1987, and it was the first Tamari brewing facility built in the U.S.

More recently, in 2019, the first stage of the plant expansion was completed to meet the increasing demand for San-J products. Today, Takashi Sato, an eighth-generation member of the founding family, is the president of San-J, continuing the exacting standards for brewing the world's finest Tamari Soy Sauce and Asian-inspired fermented foods.

San-J offers a variety of Tamari products, including Tamari, Tamari Less Sodium, Organic Tamari, Organic Tamari Less Sodium, Tamari Lite, and Organic Tamari Lite. These products are all gluten-free, and some are also organic and non-GMO.

In addition to their Tamari sauces, San-J also offers a Thai Peanut Sauce, which is traditionally used for a mouthwatering satay on the grill, made perfect for skewered chicken. However, this sauce is much more than a marinade - it can be mixed into a stir-fry for delectable sautéed vegetables or pork.

The San-J Thai Peanut Sauce is gluten-free and certified by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization. It is also non-GMO and made with premium ingredients, including San-J's signature Tamari soy sauce, which gives it a rich and complex taste that elevates the flavors of any dish.

The slightly spicy and nutty taste of San-J's Thai Peanut Sauce makes it a perfect pairing for a variety of dishes, from noodles and pasta to salads and dipping sauces. The company's mission is to bring together two centuries of wisdom, exploration, bold flavors, and quality ingredients in every bottle of sauce they make, inspiring joy with every bite.
