The Story Behind San-J
Established in 1804 in Mie, Japan, the Sato family founded San-Jirushi as a Tamari soy sauce and miso company. The three-river design of their logo symbolizes the three local rivers they utilized for their cargo vessels when operating as a port wholesaler.
In 1978, San-Jirushi established San-J to begin selling their Tamari soy sauce in the US as an importer. Their products were well-received in the American market.
The San-J plant was built in Henrico, Virginia, in 1987, becoming the first Tamari brewing facility constructed in the United States. To meet the increasing demand for San-J products, the first stage of the plant expansion was completed in 2019.
Today, Takashi Sato, an eighth-generation member of the founding family, serves as the president of San-J, upholding the exacting standards for brewing the world's finest Tamari Soy Sauce and Asian-inspired fermented foods.
